 The
avowed purpose of the SCA is the study and re-creation of the
European Middle Ages, its crafts, sciences, arts, traditions,
literature etc. The SCA “period” is defined to be Western
civilisation before 1600AD, concentrating on the Western European
Middle Ages. Under the aegis of the SCA they study dance,
calligraphy, martial arts, cooking, metalwork, stained glass,
costuming, literature….well, if they did it in the Middle Ages, then
somebody in the SCA does it (except die of the Plague!)
What separates the SCA from
Historians is the active participation in the learning process. To
learn costuming, they design and make costumes; to learn infantry
fighting, they make armour, weapons, shields etc. and put them on
and learn how it feels to wear and fight in them. To learn brewing,
you make (and sample) your own wines, meads and beers.
 The
SCA is a feudal society, which takes its form from the idea of
service and duty. It was formed in the US in 1966 and now has over
30,000 paying members in over 13 countries around the world. The SCA
“knowne world” has 18 Kingdoms, each with a King and Queen. South
Australia has a Baron and Baroness and a council who handle the
day-to-day business of running the kingdom. All the members pick a
“persona” for themselves, a name of a person who may have lived in
some time and place within the scope of the SCA, and fit their garb
and activities to that persona.
